Vatican City is the smallest state in the world for population and territorial extension Into the urban texture of Rome. in the Vatican an absolut monarchy is in force and Pope is the head of the Catholic Church. It also has its own currency but it also uses euro, it issues own stamps, it has its own newspaper and its radio.
After crossing Conciliazione street you will be in front of the imposing seventeenth-century facade of St.Peter's Basilica, designed from Carlo Moderno and the wonderfull colonnade formed by 284 Doric columns and 88 pillars in Travertine of Tivoli designed by Bernini. The Basilica today is one of the biggest churches in the world, it was erected in 320 from the imperator Costantino.
If you have some time to spend in the Vatican City, do not miss to visit the suggestive St. Peter's Basilica with the famous Sistine Chapel frescoed by Michelangelo Buonarroti, the sumptuous gardens, the sacred caves, the popes' tombs and the Vatican museums with unique works of art gathered by the Papacy. Remember to wear appropriate clothing to access the interior. Also every Sunday the Pope recites the Angelus in the square around 12:00.
