Piramid
The piramid in egyptian style
It is the tomb of the magistrate Caio Cestius Epulone built around 12 BC. in a period, shortly after the conquest of Egypt by the empire, in which the original culture of this new province exerted a strong fascination in Roman culture. Inside, like a pharaoh, the praetor placed his treasure; the possibility of a loot, stimulated someone to desecrate the tomb by penetrating the funeral chamber. The signs of the burglary are still visible.
The position of the monument guaranteed its longevity: in fact, the Pyramid is on the route of the Aurelian walls, built at the end of the third century. The private tomb thus became a defensive structure, maintained at the end of the nineteenth century. it is part of the complex of Aurelian walls built by Emperor Aureliano in 275 AD
The Pyramid Cestia was built, according to an inscription on the facade in 330 days, with concrete; it is 36.40 meters high and has a square base of about 30 meters on each side. It is possible to see the back side going to the nearby and monumental Acattolico cemetery, or cemetery of the English. It is recommended to visit it, as it is a fantastic and fascinating monument, and a reproduction of the ancient Egyptian pyramids.
