Spain Suqare
and trinity of the mountains
Spain square is without a doubt the most famous square in Rome and its name derives from the historical presence in this square of the Spanish Embassy.
Spain square extends in front of the Pincio hill and has an irregular shape. It is dominated by the majestic and famous staircase of Trinità dei Monti, built by Francesco de Sanctis between 1723 and 1726, as a link between the square and theTrinity of the Mountains's church. The stairway is of great charm and is a must for any tourist who visits Rome: in spring it is covered with colored flowers giving an enchanting scenery.
At the foot of the Spanish Steps, Pietro Bernini has created the "Barcaccia's fountain", a fountain without jets and shaped like a sunken boat, considered one of the most unique in all of Rome.
From Spain square there are some of the most famous streets in Rome: Condotti street, where the most elegant boutiques and the most prestigious brands are located, Margutta street, once the artists 'and painters' district, Babuino's street which connects Spain square with people square.
Trinity of the mountains' church was built in the 500 and renovated in the nineteenth century. Preserves an interesting Deposition by Daniele da Volterra, follower of Michelangelo.
